Abstract: The objective of Finnish education policy is to give all its citizens the same opportunity for access to education by creating a system in which no student is excluded regardless of age, economic and social status, or place of residence. Finland also ranks second worldwide for Internet access in schools.
I will present Finnish education system and especially foreign language learning in Finland and explain both the achievements and the challenges of current Finnish education system. I will also tell how national collaborative projects between Finnish universities have helped to develop online courses for foreign languages by combining resources and developing national cooperation in higher education. I will also discuss how national solutions, projects, and networks in Finnish language learning and teaching have provided new nationwide tools for both teachers and language centres.
In this presentation I will explain the main achievements of our first nationwide project called Digitalize your teaching – 2Digi as well as an ongoing continuation project called 2Digi2. This new project aims to share and promote new learning objectives for the digital age and analyse the generic skills needed in a digital environment and create guidelines for online language teaching especially in higher education. It will provide guidelines for teaching students with special needs in the digital environment as well as guidelines for relationship building in a digital environment.
